Why is an afro called an afro?

The term "afro" is derived from the term "Afro-American," which refers to people of African descent living in the United States. The hairstyle, characterized by its voluminous, rounded shape and natural texture, became widely popular among African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, symbolizing pride in their cultural heritage and a rejection of Eurocentric beauty standards. The term "afro" was adopted to reflect the hairstyle's association with African identity and its significance within the black community.


Why is afro hair called natural hair?

Afro-hair is called natural hair because it is the unprocessed, unaltered state of black hair. This means that it has not been chemically relaxed, straightened, or otherwise treated to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards. Afro hair is characterised by its tight curls or kinks, and it can be very versatile and styled in a variety of ways.

I loved playing with hair ever since the day I first picked up a Barbie doll! Helping at the tender age of 13 at my elder sister’s salon in Holborn on weekends, I knew hairdressing was my passion! After learning a very diverse aspect of hairdressing at Identity UK my hairdressing career began, mastering all hair textures from Afro, Asian to European hair I decided to take the plunge and open 3thirty in 2009 with a vision to create a relaxing, friendly and unpretentious atmosphere which would allow us to bring out the best in your hair.

I joined 3thirty in 2010 which allowed me to gain first-hand experience in dealing with all hair textures as-well as colour, the passion and strive I have for hairdressing motivated my progression which seen me start from a young stylist to now the manager and artistic director of 3thirty thus allowing me to build a very diverse clientele but more importantly some great friends.

My career started alongside Tiff at Identity UK as a junior stylist, I met with Tiff again in 2009 at the launch of 3thirty which over the years has now matured my skills further, I knew I wanted to learn and be able to be a diverse hairdresser and 3thirty has allowed me to gain this experience, I have a passion for creative work and pride myself close to attention to detail. After giving birth to gorgeous twins I now work with the team part time.
